Abel González Melo (Havana, 1980) is a Cuban-Spanish playwright, theater director, and educator. He holds a PhD in Literary Studies and a Master’s degree in Theater from the Complutense University of Madrid, and a Bachelor’s degree in Theater Studies from the University of the Arts in Cuba.

His works, which have premiered and been published in over twenty countries and translated into twelve languages, include notable plays such as “Chamaco” (Spanish Embassy in Cuba Award 2005), “Talco” (Goethe Institute in Cuba Award 2009), “Mecánica” (Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba Award 2014), “Epopeya” (Virgilio Piñera Award 2014), “Bayamesa” (International Casa de las Américas Award 2020), “Intemperie” (Santa Clara City Foundation Award 2021), and “En busca de La Peregrina” (BBVA Leonardo Fellowship 2022).

He has received the Alejo Carpentier Essay Award 2009, the Literary Criticism Award three times, the Villanueva Award for Theater Criticism five times, and the Cultura Viva Award 2012 for his body of literary work.

Since 2010, he has been directing the theater company at Carlos III University of Madrid. Currently, he is an artistic associate at Argos Teatro (Havana) and Aguijón Theater (Chicago), and a resident playwright at Teatro Avante (Miami). Since 2022, he has been part of the artistic department at Teatro de La Abadía (Madrid) and is the Artistic Coordinator of the Corral de Comedias de Alcalá de Henares.
