AGUIJÓN THEATER COMPANY
About Aguijón’s Theater International Playwriting Contest conceived and created in 2014 by Rosario Vargas, Founder and Co-Artistic Director of Aguijón Theater Company of Chicago, this biennial playwriting contest aims to:
– Disseminate Spanish-language theater across the United States
– Promote contemporary stage writing
– Foster a dialogue among authors and creators in their quest for genuine expression and exploration of new trends in theatrical discipline. The contest is held in partnership with the Instituto Cervantes of Chicago and the National Museum of Mexican Art, enhancing its cultural reach and impact.

INSTITUTO CERVANTES OF CHICAGO
Founded in 1991 by the Spanish government, the Instituto Cervantes is a public institution committed to promoting the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures around the world. With a presence in over 90 cities across 45 countries, the Chicago branch, established as a nonprofit in 1996, champions the richness of Spanish speaking cultures in the Midwest of the United States. Since its creation, it has become an essential cultural hub, showcasing a diverse array of cultural expressions and facilitating exchanges among local, national and internationally acclaimed artists across various disciplines, including art, design, architecture, literature, theater, music, dance, photography, film, and sciences. This institution not only exemplifies a profound commitment to cultural and educational advancement but also embodies the spirit of inclusivity and diversity it fosters within the community.
NATIONAL MUSEUM OF MEXICAN ART
Established forty years ago by visionary founder Carlos Tortolero, the National Museum of Mexican Art set out to establish an art and culture organization committed to accessibility, education, and social justice. NMMA’s mission is to enhance the appreciation and understanding of Mexican art and culture on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border through a significant permanent collection of Mexican art, rich visual and performing arts programs, high-quality artistic education programs, and the professional development of Mexican artists. The Museum also serves as a cultural ally for other Latino artistic groups.
